Total Spine Rehab for you neck and upper back at Active Spines Part I
TSR(Total Spine Rehab) for the neck:
1. Gentle neck range of motion exercises. Gentle lateral flexion, flexion-extension, and rotation for 20 repetition and 3 sets. It takes less than 3 minutes! These help loosen up tight neck muscles, decrease muscle tension, fatigue and help with blood flow. It also brings oxygen to that region! These are good for people whom sit at desk all day.
2. Gentle neck stretching exercises in flexion, lateral flexion, 45 degree lateral flexion and extension-lateral flexion. Use gentle force, hold 15 seconds each and repeat 3 times. Take approximately 3 long breathes( inhale and exhale) while you are doing it. This helps muscles to relax better! This will take about 5 minutes! Do this through out the day and you will feel good as new!
3. Chin tug exercise: This is very effective for people who has forward head posture. Start by leaning against the wall. Glide the back of your skull up and down the wall. Use your hand to help the motion by pushing your chin up and down. It will be hard to do in the beginning. But you will get better at it after a few times. Please do this slow and with proper breathing rhythm. Do 20 repetitions and 3 sets. This takes about 5 minutes.
4. Neck muscle strengthening exercises: Believe it or not some of your neck muscles get weak due to poor posture and inactivity, especially the deep neck muscles! Training for deep neck muscle requires supervision due to its complexity and depth. Here let's do some isometric neck exercises! First sit up straight and tug your chin in. Then put hand(right or left) on your forehead. Push head into your hand, not allowing neck to bend. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times. Repeat this over the sides and back of your head! These are rather simple right. This will takes about 10 minutes!
5. Posture pump exercise and/or cervical traction: this is a very effective exercise to restore cervical spine curvature and rehydrate cervical discs. You will do this for 10 minutes in the clinic!
By doing these exercises correctly and regularly, your neck will be healthy and active! I hope these are not too complicated for you. Please check back for phase II and III exercises!

Three types of chiropractic care in our clinic.
At Active Spines Chiropractic in Bellevue we offer 3 types of care for patients whom can benefit from our treatments.
1. The first type of care is called initial intensive care. This is a time when you are in pain. You have discomfort and not feeling well. You might have neck pain, low back pain, headache, shoulder pain, upper back pain or sports injuries. Your body is either in an acute inflammatory stage or chronic repetitive injury stage. The goal of treatment is to get your symptoms under control and get you to feel better. A general treatment protocol is ice, gentle stretching and gentile chiropractic adjustment, after a detail chiropractic exam and x-rays if necessary. The treatment frequency varies from person to person but usually is more frequent. It ranges from 2 to 3 times a week and sometimes even 4 to 5 times in very rare occasion. The length of treatment is 2 to 6 weeks.
2. The second type of care is called corrective care or rehab care. This is a time that you are not in too much pain or you simply feels better. The goal of treatment is to correct the underlying problems such as joint immobility, inflexibility, poor biomechanics, poor posture, poor muscle memory, weak muscle tone, overactive muscle groups. This is a time we go more in depth about the biomechanics of your body. Like any rehab, strength or exercise programs this type of care takes time and efforts. It takes time to retrain your body muscle memory, proprioception and joint flexibility. It takes time for you follow through and do the exercise daily. It is not an easy path, but we will guide you through this and you will see the result. The treatment frequency is less than the first type of care but is longer. It is usually 1 to 2 times a week for 4 to 8 weeks. Some chronic conditions may take longer to resolve.
3. The third type of care is called preventative care or wellness care. It is like your annual physical exam, your eye exam or dental check ups! Your spine definitely needs some attention too! It is a time that you are feeling much better. You are doing the exercises for your neck, back or any other area of your body routinely. Your spine is in better health and you have proper muscle tone to support it! Periodical check up is recommended to make sure that your spine is in good alignment. And we can take care of minor problem early on! The benefit of this care is to keep your body function at it's best and to live your life to the fullest!
Lastly, it is up to you on the care you like. Our care can fit most of your needs!

Gua Sha for neck or back sprain/strain, tendonitis, or soft tissue injuries!
Gua Sha is one of the soft tissue and manual therapy techniques that I use in our clinic to help patient recover from their injury. A detail exam is required before performing this treatment.
What is Gua Sha? Gua Sha is an ancient medical treatment in Asia. Gua means to rub or friction. Sha means congestion of blood at the surface of the body. I usually use a slice of water buffalo horn and massage lotion as treatment tools. First we need to find an area that needs treatment. This is usually a spot that is tender to touch, sore, tight, and has knots. Most of the time it has been there for a while and is chronic in nature. Sometimes acute edema responses well to treatment too, but careful examination and evaluation is required. By applying specific repetitive sweeping, brushing and scooping motion over a small injury site for 3 to 5 minutes, it breaks down adhesion, increase blood flow, help soft tissue to regenerate, and promote healing. I also incorporate some stretching, and joint movement while doing this to maximize treatment result!
Clinical indication: chronic neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, rotator cuff injury, tendonitis or tendonosis of the biceps, Achilles, knee, or hip. Facet syndrome, carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve entrapment, thoracic outlet syndrome, post whiplash injuries or scar tissue conditions.
Treatment frequency is 1 to 2 times a week for 5 to 10 visits depending on the severity and complexity of your condition(s).
Potential treatment response: most of the time you will feel relieved, decreased pain or soreness, and increase range of motion right after treatment. You may also feels sore afterward, kinda like after a heavy workout, but it will decrease gradually. You will also notice some bruising, red spots or pettichia. This is an indication of chronic injury and the treatment is working! The bruising will disappear in 3 days. Ice the area 10 to 15 minutes as needed at home will help with recovery.

Medical Therapeutic Massage Therapy for neck pain, back pain, car accident and work injuries!
Massage Therapy is an ancient healing art with scientifically based Therapeutic Effects. Throughout the centuries, the healing powers of massage have been sough to promote relaxation and balance. Gentle kneading and manipulation of the soft tissue affects circulation of blood flow. This increase in blood carries oxygen and nutrition to areas of the body. Toxins are released from dormant tissues and the nervous system is soothed. Like a breath of fresh air you body responds with a new awareness. We offer different types of massage in our clinic such as deep tissue massage, Swedish relaxation massage, lymph drainage massage and more.
Our therapist is contracted with major health insurances including worker compensation and car accident coverage. For one hour massage you will only responsible for your copay which range from $10 to $30.
If you do not have massage coverage through insurance, we do have a special offer package. We have a 6 session massage special package. You first prepay $120 for the package. And you only pay $50 per massage at the time of service! That gives you a $60.00 saving in the end! Please contact us for availability!

Kinesio Taping for Neck pain, back pain, tennis elbow, knee pain and more!
Kinesio taping is a method used to help normalize the function of muscles and other connective tissues. Kinesio taping is used for both spinal and extremity conditions such as neck pain, back pain, tennis elbow, knee pain, shin splint and shoulder pain.
Kineso taping uses elastic tape rather than the rigid tape traditionally used in sports. The elastic properties of this tape help in many ways:
- Improve contraction of a weakened muscle
- Reduce muscle fatigue and spasm
- Reduce over-stretching and over-contraction of muscles
- Re-educate muscles through sensory feedback
- Lessen edema (swelling) through aiding the lymphatic system
- Minimize post-traumatic or post-surgical bruising through improved circulation
- Help mobilize scar tissue by enhancing glide between tissue layers
- Help correct joint mechanics through aiding muscle function around the joint
- Relieve pain by activating the natural analgesic system in our skin receptors

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)- neck, shoulder, arm and hand symptoms.
The thoracic outlet is located between the first rib, the clavicle, and the scalene muscles. The brachial plexus and the subcalvian artery pass between the anterior and medial scalenes muscles, the first rib, and the overlying clavicle. The brachial plexus and the sbuclavian artery can be compressed as they pass between the thoracic outlet. The lower roots of the brachial plexus (C8-T1) or ulnar nerve are at high risk than the more superior roots because of their location in the plexus.
TOS is also known as scalene anticus syndrome, hyperabduction syndrome, cervical rib sundrome, costoclavicular syndrome and pectoralis minor syndrome.
Causes of TOS:
- Mechanical: repetitive stress, overuse, poor posture, muscle spasm, decondition or artrophy.
- Traumatic: penetration injury
- Congenital: cervical rib
- Vascular
- Infeciton
- Idiopathic
Conservatice treatments for TOS:
- Self care tips: improvement in posture, office ergonomics, modification in work related posture habits, cervical traction, stretching
- Treatment in our clinic: a few options, myofascial release technique, PIR stretching, In office posture training for cervical and thoracic spine, strengthen weak muscles, chiropractic adjustment for neck, upper back and first rib, and medical massage.

TMJ Syndrome with forward head posture
Forward head posture like the picture on the top can also cause TMJ syndrome. The jaw gets pulled down and backward due to poor posture, which causes tension and misalignment at the TMJ joint. Self care for forward head posture includes but not limit to chin retraction exercise, neck and upper back stretching, neck muscle strengthening, posture exercise and office ergonomics. Chiropractic adjustment over cervical, thoracic and 1st rib are beneficial. When your spines is in balance you will have greater result from home exercises. Do you have forward head posture? Do you always carry stress over your upper back? Are you always slouching and hunched over? If yes to any of the above, please call Dr. Cheng at 425-818-0086. He will be able to help you! Don't wait until it is too late. Chiropractic adjustment is a very safe and natural treatment to help you live your life to the fullest.

Please Pray for Greg- Expect The Unexpected
It was quite an uneasy and nerve-racking experience for me since the time I stepped into the hospital. I felt very sorry and helpless for people who are in the neurosurgery unit especially for Greg. It must be very tough going through that whole process and get your life back to where it was. This has kept me thinking the whole day and tried to look at it in a different angle.
This is something we cannot prepare for it. We can do our best to keep ourselves or love ones healthy and active physically, mentally and spiritually. And leave the rest to God. Let's all pray for Greg. I pray that he will have a safe surgery and speedy recovery. We would love to see him join us again soon. Please keep him in your prayer, thanks.

Why do you want to open your own clinic?
I open my own clinic because:
It is fun, challenging, and exciting! I got my athletic training degree in 1999 and finished my chiropractic degree in 2005. I have been practicing chiropractic for 5 years on the Eastside. I am combining chiropractic and sports medicine in my treatment plan. I have found that this is really great for the patients. Not only their spine is in alignment longer but also their back is stronger. Because we have implemented exercise protocols for the neck and back. The treatment is efficient, effective and long lasting!

Do you get adjueted Doc?
Yes, I do. I get adjusted about once a month if no sooner. Why? Because I want to keep my spine in good shape and keep myself healthy. I want my body to function and perform at its best. Waiting when I have back or neck pain to see a chiropractor is the last thing I want to do. Why? Because it takes longer to get better. It is always easier to prevent the problem than fixing the problem. Do you agree?
Last, who give you adjustments? My chiropractic friends do. You can contact me at activespines.com
Why do you become a chiropractor?
I was an athletic trainer while in college back in Taiwan. I was helping athletes with various sports injuries ranging from sprain/strain to post surgical rehabilitation. It was a great time in my life applying what I learned in class and helping people out. In my senior year while preparing for GRE and graduate school, out of the blue my dad told me about chiropractic. He heard about chiropractic through his friend in Japan and saw the chiropractor due to his chronic low back pain. After his adjustment, he felt much better. He came home and told me about it. I was skeptical at first but later I requested information from chiropractic schools in the USA. After reviewing all the materials, I decided to study chiropractic instead of going to graduate school. At that time the chiropractic curriculum looked pretty intense and just a lot more than graduate school. But I liked the challenge and believed that I can do it. Therefore I left Taiwan and came to the USA for chiropractic school. As after four long years of studying I got my degree in early 2005 and started practicing chiropractic. As a chiropractor I can offer more than treating sports injuries, but see patients in all age group and many different conditions. This is my story. You can email me at info@activespines.com

The end-results are a more relaxed and centered patient, with a faster healing time.
Greg received his Therapeutic Massage and Clinical Hydrotherapy certificate from the Northwest School of Massage and Hydrotherapy, in Seattle, WA (1987), and is a Licensed Massage Practitioner in the state of Washington (1988). He is also a graduate of the American College of Naturopathic Medicine in Salem, OR (1982), graduating with distinction in Pediatrics.
